Ten-codes, also known as ten signals, are codes used to represent common phrases in voice communication, particularly by law enforcement and in Citizen's Band (CB) radio transmissions. These codes were first developed in 1937 and expanded in 1974, by the Association of Public-Safety Communications (APCO), and allowed for brevity and standardization of message traffic by radio.
While most of the codes are common among law enforcement, there are some differences between various departments and regions around the United States making standardization of the codes difficult and lead to the federal
government recommending they be discontinued in favor of everyday
language.
However the use of 10 Codes has continued and many agencies still use them commonly. The following list is the official list of code from APCO.
